Stephen gets Stuck
‘I don’t want to be here.’
‘I really don’t want to be here.’
That little voice still pops into my head from time to time, but now I can tell it ‘wise up!’ or just say ‘0k, let’s go.’
However sometimes people do find themselves in the sort of situation where they can’t just ignore the little voice and get on with it. They find themselves stuck somewhere that they don’t want to be stuck.
The well-known, equally loved and despised, larger than life, BBC TV and Radio 5Live presenter, Stephen Nolan is one such person.
Nolan has had issues with his weight for many years and has documented his weight loss attempts on social media. He loses several stone and then puts it (and more) back on again within a few months. His mother, to whom he refers affectionately as Big Audrey, has often been heard to admonish her son for his inability to maintain his weight losses. Nolan’s excess weight has got him into difficult situations more than once.
On Sunday, the 15th of June 2015, Nolan set off in his car, drove to Newcastle and parked in a carpark at the foot of the Mournes. He left his car and started walking. Nolan had resolved yet again to lose his excess weight once and for all. He decided to climb a mountain.
On that sunny morning, Nolan, dressed in a T shirt, snug fitting shorts and lightweight trainers began to climb. As he continued, he realised that he wasn’t appropriately dressed. His feet were becoming increasingly sore, his shorts were chafing and he was getting sunburnt because he had forgotten to put on sunscreen. To add to his discomfort, he hadn't brought any water was getting thirsty. As his climb progressed Nolan was encouraged by other walkers, families with toddlers posed for selfies with him, others tweeted his progress and posted on social media.
Sore and exhausted but ecstatic, Nolan reached the summit of Sleive Commedagh at 6.30pm.
At this point he realised that he wouldn't get to the studio in Belfast at 8.00 for his ten o’clock show but with no phone signal, he couldn’t let his production team know and began to panic. He hurried down the mountain being overtaken by hikers and small children. Surrounded by trees and became frightened (not of the trees themselves) he had become disoriented and had no idea how to get out of the forest. Eventually he got back to the car park to discover the gates locked. He was trapped!
Nolan called the PSNI to get him out of his sticky situation, they obliged and he presented his ten o’clock show that evening.
Just under a year later, on Friday the 11th of April 2016 Nolan got himself stuck again. This time in his own radio studio. Somehow, as he was getting up from his chair, it slid backwards and he managed to get it stuck in the doorway wedged under the door handle. It took him 35 minutes of struggling to free himself whilst his bosses were in a meeting in the room next to the studio,
Nolan documented whole the sorry affair.
